Ponzi Scheme and internet fraud

I recently had a nice chat with a person living in my community who tried to sell me a service.

Ponzi scheme derived from the the pyramid scheme (like current Madoff scheme, who siphoned of $50 billion in the USA) where investors are promised a fixed or a variable return based on bringing in more investors (MLM). This works well when the market is down, like now or uncertain economic situation like the 1927 market crash in USA.

So in effect, gullible investors flock to invest with a small token amount. Now the risk is theirs to make more money. They get hold of some good faces, to pose off as the ones who made money using this scheme. They get a cut, if they bring in more investors. Sounds so simple! But the reality is, whomsoever signsup first, makes the getaway with a bigger payout. Earlier the better.

Obviously the homepage of your website, does not have the cost implication and how you go about doing the biz, other than the information of this site being registered at GoDaddy.com on Dec 17th, 2008, without giving out any contact details (not public). This is a big no no in terms of internet security. Why do I tell this? As a good samaritan, I have delivered closer to 1000+ sites, as a Center Head of a Web 2.0 company. There is also no Versign certificate on the home page, while you go about collecting personal information. This is mandatory for any website collecting credit card information!

In understand that the biz is from http://www.WowInternetBiz.com (blacklisted by many spam filter servers - so they go on creating new sites paid by their new recruits to sell this biz), which is about setting up websites and unique selling of their MyVideoTalk product of unique Video Emailing on MLM.

  1. Nowhere, they talk about the bandwidth requirement or make people understand that the same thing can be done with a simple webcam, and a tool to record file, and attach it to the recepient in an email.
  2. Skype.com or Google Video Chat would give you the video conferencing facility. Even, Yahoo chat would give you the simple video conferencing. MSN video chat is good too!
  3. Does it provide for the online sharing and editing of documents like Webex?
  4. Why would people pay in dollars when they are expected to do biz in India?

Note - Obviously if you put this biz opp in a residency community only forum, dont I have the right to comment on it? Read this sites articles on online fraud.... http://www.iovation.com/

Good luck for your biz!

Greatness

What is Success ? "To me, success is all about being in the process of joyfully creating a life that reflects your highest values, your deepest beliefs and your greatest dreams."

What matters? "At the end of our lives, the only thing that endures is who we became, the difference we made and the love we gave"

Obama and the Illinois Governor

I did a quick Prasna now on Obama and the Illinois Governor, with a question in mind whether Obama will take oath as President of United states of America and saw that Moon is placed in the 5th house., which is connected to 6th and 10th = means that the question is about the job of the person in mind.

Moon is connected with legal troublesome Mars which is placed inthe 3rd.

I deduce that this has something to do with the relatives of Obama, and some illegal connection with Blagojevich.

Now, Saturn is transiting 10th house. Obstacles till Jan 3rd, 2009 7.30 PM IST. And there is a lull period, where the person in question, Obama, should have his mouth shut till, Jan 15th, 2009 1.22 AM IST.

So if Obama is implicated before Jan 3rd, he will not take oath as President. Joe Biden then can officially become President, if the electoral college nominates him or Hillary comes back in the back door.

Also note that, as per KP System, the DBA running during that time would be Sat - Ket - Sat, which means, that March 20, 2009 ( Sat - X - Sat or Sat - Sat - X) would give him life threatening wounds based on his job. So he has to be careful.

Wait and watch!

How times change

Christmas and Santa

Even though the majority of the families are Hindus, Santa has occupied the kids hearts. In a complex of 104 apts. only 3 Christian families are living. Still there was a pompous celebration.

My first Car and first Snow in USA during 1994

My first Old Car (shared purchase) 1985 Chevy Cavalier

Snow on the streets of Plainville, CT, USA

With my friend in the USA during 1995

He is Rajkumar owner of Comdus and TradingBell in DC area. My childhood buddy known since 1979.

Christmas Carols (c) God

Santa Claus Is Coming To Town

You better watch out
You better not cry
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town

He's making a list,
And checking it twice;
Gonna find out Who's naughty and nice.
Santa Claus is coming to town

He sees you when you're sleeping
He knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake!

O! You better watch out!
You better not cry.
Better not pout, I'm telling you why.
Santa Claus is coming to town.
Santa Claus is coming to town.

Jingle Bells

Chorus
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh.
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh.

Dashing through the snow, in a one-horse open sleigh,
Over the fields we go, laughing all the way.
Bells on bob-tails ring, making spirits bright,
What fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight.

(Chorus )
A day or two ago, I thought I'd take a ride
And soon Miss Fanny Bright, was seated by my side;
The horse was lean and lank, misfortune seemed his lot;
He got into a drifted bank and we got upsot
(Chorus)
A day or two ago, the story I must tell
I went out on the snow, and on my back I fell;
A gent was riding by, in a one-horse open sleigh
He laughed as there I sprawling lie but quickly drove away
(Chorus)
Now the ground is white, go it while you're young
Take the girls tonight, and sing this sleighing song;
Just get a bob-tailed bay, two-forty as his speed
Hitch him to an open sleigh and crack! you'll take the lead
(Chorus)

Silent Night

Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight,
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavely hosts sing alleluia;
Christ the Saviour, is born!
Christ the Saviour, is born!

Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

You know Dasher and Dancer
And Prancer and Vixen,
Comet and Cupid
And Donner and Blitzen.
But do you recall
The most famous reindeer of all?

Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
(reindeer)
Had a very shiny nose
(like a light bulb)
And if you ever saw it
(saw it)
You would even say it glows
(like a flash light)
All of the other reindeer
(reindeer)
Used to laugh and call him names
(like Pinochio)
They never let poor Rudolph
(Rudolph)
Play in any reindeer games
(like Monopoly)

Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say
(Ho Ho Ho)
Rudolph with your nose so bright
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?
Then all the reindeer loved him
(loved him)
And they shouted out with glee
(yippee)
"Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
(reindeer)
You'll go down in history!"
(like Columbus)

Joy to the World

Joy to the world! the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
and heaven and nature sing,
and heaven and nature sing,
and heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

Joy to the earth! the Savior reigns;
Let men their songs employ;
while fields and floods,
rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

Joy to the world! the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King…..3

Deck the Halls

Deck the halls with boughs of holly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Tis the season to be jolly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Don we now our gay apparel,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Troll the ancient Yule tide carol,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
See the blazing Yule before us,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Strike the harp and join the chorus.
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Follow me in merry measure,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
While I tell of Yule tide treasure,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Fast away the old year passes,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Hail the new, ye lads and lasses,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Sing we joyous, all together,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Heedless of the wind and weather,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Deck the halls with boughs of holly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Hearing

Hearing

Two great friends, who hadn't seen each other for years, were walking down the street together, renewing old times. "Just a minute," said one, "I think I hear something," and turning a loose paving stone over he liberated a cricket which was chirping merrily away.

"Why, that's astounding. Of all the people on the street at this hour, hurrying from work, you alone hear the cricket above all the traffic noises."

"My friend," said the first. "I learned a long time ago that people hear in life only what they want to hear. Now, the noise of traffic has neither increased nor decreased in the past few moments, but watch."

And as he finished speaking he let a silver half dollar fall from his pocket to the sidewalk. Everyone within an amazingly large hearing distance stopped and looked around.

It is said that life can sometimes be compared to a movie. By watching the trailer we decide how the movie is and we are right in many cases. Keeping this in mind we realized that along with details it is also important to look at life from a different angle.

This may sound stupid, but think twice!

இந்தியன் விக்டரி

Possible win, as seen by KP system of astrology yesterday. Only thing is I timed that it would be all over at 3.30 Pm, nevertheless it was 4.05PM, wen the final boundary was struck by Sachin Tendulkar, getting the winning runs along with his 41st Test century.

He dedicates his effort to the team and the victims of Mumbai.

I was a nice victory, a team effort I would say!

Four on Four for Dhoni. Winner like Ricky Ponting! Thanks to Lakshmi Rai's energy tonic.

Not a word uttered about Dravid, who will get another chance at Mohali. Something special has to be done by him. His good time comes after Dec 19th. So from then onwards he gets 122 days of solid good time, to recover and retire. You can see some big innings from him. K Srikkanth please make a note of this!

Mark my words Rahul Dravid retires from International cricket on or around April 20th, 2009. This might be after a fabulous, Indian victories abroad. Pakistan tour is not there, so it would be against New Zealand.

Social Media and Networking

My wife says I spend more time on Social friends Network than with family. ;-)

Well in case of adversities, family has helped me...

Social networking, Viral networking is a myth!

You create audience to listen to your own views discussed!

#Mumbai photos hyped..

Those who got in first, self styled social networking Gurus call the shots on determining who uses what.

Blogging is stressfull
!

Most of the folks use this Social networking to develop themselves at the costs of the employer. Well some might argue u get biz!

There are well known personalities on blog for ex Dr.Rudhran http://rudhran.wordpress.com/ who use the Social Media to vent out!

Nammoora Hotel, Jaya Nagar

Nammoora Hotel, Jaya Nagar is a decent pay for the weight Take Out hotel (Take Away). It is pure vegetarian, and if you have lots of relatives, then it is the right place to go to.

Easy to find, after Woodys, take the second left and the third right.

You better carry boxes and plastic covers to pack.

Nett weight value of food is good. Minimum value sold is 250 grams, and 100 grams for chutney only.

Best item is Bisi Bele Bath for Rs 84/- a Kilo.

We also bought Vangi bath, Veg Pulav, Kala Kurma, Maddur Vada, Ghee Chappathi and Pista Burfi.

Costed us only Rs 192/- and still half of Pulav and Vangi Bath along with Sweets are left.

Hearty Lunch.

One actors family came to pick up food. They bought 4 items of 250 grams each. just Rs 100/-.

He is an MP, lives nearby, whose whife was an actor too...

Dont they know the value of money?

Something Fishy Langford Road

There is a pricy restaurant called Something Fishy on Langford Road, just after Sun Microsystems office, at Divyashree Chambers (Shanthi Nagar Hockey Stadium).

TOI foodie Pallavi recommended us today. I could see lots of first timers. The catch line was cost effective in this downturn.

NO!

For a family of 4, it costed us about Rs 1000/- for a hearty meal. Fish, Fish and some fish. To go with it Fish Biriyani and Malabar Parotta. It was as good or slightly expensive than Barbeque Nation, who has 3 Locations all around Bangalore.... It was like eating at Taj Residency... costing the same... Non Veg Thali for 2 adults, and a shared meal for kids...

Well Pallavi had a hearty meal (free of course) and ensured lots of people visited there.... Great Marketing!

It was like home food. No stomach troubles....

Still kids felt hungry, asked for Icecream, after a stop near Lalbagh where we met two blogger families, who came from Chennai.

I pity the newly married couple who visited there, and returned after a hectic search to find that place, knowing that Thali was not served on weekends.

Take care of your heart

Qn: What are the thumb rules for a layman to take care of his heart?

Ans:
1. Diet - Less of carbohydrate, more of protein, less oil
2. Exercise - Half an hour's walk, at least five days a week; avoid lifts and avoid sitting for a longtime
3. Quit smoking
4. Control weight
5. Control blood pressure and sugar

Qn: Is eating non-veg food (fish) good for the heart?

Ans: No

Qn: It's still a grave shock to hear that some apparently healthy person
gets a cardiac arrest. How do we understand it in perspective?

Ans: This is called silent attack; that is why we recommend everyone past the age of 30 to undergo routine health checkups.

Qn: Are heart diseases hereditary?

Ans: Yes

Qn: What are the ways in which the heart is stressed? What practices do you suggest to de-stress?

Ans: Change your attitude towards life. Do not look for perfection in everything in life.

Qn: Is walking better than jogging or is more intensive exercise required to keep a healthy heart?

Ans: Walking is better than jogging since jogging leads to early fatigue and injury to joints

Qn: You have done so much for the poor and needy. What has inspired you to do so?

Ans: Mother Theresa , who was my patient

Qn: Can people with low blood pressure suffer heart diseases?

Ans: Extremely rare

Qn: Does cholesterol accumulates right from an early age
(I'm currently only 22) or do you have to worry about it only after you are above 30 years of age?

Ans: Cholesterol accumulates from childhood.

Qn: How do irregular eating habits affect the heart ?

Ans: You tend to eat junk food when the habits are irregular and your body's enzyme release for digestion gets confused.

Qn: How can I control cholesterol content without using medicines?

Ans: Control diet, walk and eat walnut.

Qn: Can yoga prevent heart ailments?

Ans: Yoga helps.

Qn: Which is the best and worst food for the heart?

Ans: Fruits and vegetables are the best and the worst is oil.

Qn: Which oil is better - groundnut, sunflower, olive?

Ans: All oils are bad .

Qn: How do you differentiate between pain caused by a heart attack and that caused due to gastric trouble?

Ans: Extremely difficult without ECG.

Qn: What is the main cause of a steep increase in heart problems amongst youngsters? I see people of about 30-40 yrs of age having heart attacks and serious heart problems.

Ans: Increased awareness has increased incidents. Also, s edentary lifestyles, smoking, junk food, lack of exercise in a country where people are genetically three times more vulnerable for heart attacks than Europeans and Americans.

Qn: Is it possible for a person to have BP outside the normal range of 120/80 and yet be perfectly healthy?

Ans: Yes.

Qn: Marriages within close relatives can lead to heart problems for the child. Is it true?

Ans : Yes, co-sanguinity leads to congenital abnormalities and you may not have a software engineer as a child

Qn: Many of us have an irregular daily routine and many a times we have to stay late nights in office. Does this affect our heart ? What precautions would you recommend?

Ans : When you are young, nature protects you against all these irregularities. However, as you grow older, respect the biological clock.

Qn: Will taking anti-hypertensive drugs cause some other complications (short / long term)?

Ans : Yes, most drugs have some side effects. However, modern anti-hypertensive drugs are extremely safe.

Qn: Will consuming more coffee/tea lead to heart attacks?

Ans : No.

Qn: Does consuming bananas help reduce hypertension?

Ans : No.

Qn: Can a person help himself during a heart attack (Because we see a lot of forwarded emails on this)?

Ans : Yes. Lie down comfortably and put an aspirin tablet of any description under the tongue and ask someone to take you to the nearest coronary care unit without any delay and do not wait for the ambulance since most of the time, the ambulance does not turn up.

Qn: Do, in any way, low white blood cells and low hemoglobin count lead to heart problems?

Ans : No. But it is ideal to have normal hemoglobin level to increase your exercise capacity.

Qn: Sometimes, due to the hectic schedule we are not able to exercise. So, does walking while doing daily chores at home or climbing the stairs in the house, work as a substitute for exercise?

Ans : Certainly. Avoid sitting continuously for more than half an hour and even the act of getting out of the chair and going to another chair and sitting helps a lot.

Qn: Is there a relation between heart problems and blood sugar?

Ans: Yes. A strong relationship since diabetics are more vulnerable to heart attacks than non-diabetics.

Qn: What are the things one needs to take care of after a heart operation?

Ans : Diet, exercise, drugs on time , Control cholesterol, BP, weight.

Qn: Are people working on night shifts more vulnerable to heart disease when compared to day shift workers?

Ans : No.

Qn: What are the modern anti-hypertensive drugs?

Ans : There are hundreds of drugs and your doctor will chose the right combination for your problem, but my suggestion is to avoid the drugs and go for natural ways of controlling blood pressure by walk, diet to
reduce weight and changing attitudes towards lifestyles.

Qn: Does dispirin or similar headache pills increase the risk of heart attacks?

Ans : No.

Qn: Why is the rate of heart attacks more in men than in women?

Ans : Nature protects women till the age of 45.

Qn: How can one keep the heart in a good condition?

Ans : Eat a healthy diet, avoid junk food, exercise everyday, do not smoke and, go for health checkup s if you are past the age of 30 ( once in six months recommended) ....

Two interesting interviews, written by friends

One of my interviews went like this:
Interviewer : Good Morning. How are you doing today?
Me : Hi.
I/v : So, Can you brief about yourself.
Me : I guess everything I can say is on my resume.
I/v : Oka..y, Do you know any C++?
Me : All I know is C.
I/v : But I dont know C too well. Besides, what is there to ask in C?
Me : I guess that is your problem. I have been short listed for C and that is all I ever want to know. I am not even interested in learning C++. So you have to ask me in C. Ask me anything in C and I shall answer.
I/v : Oka..y, can you tell me the difference between C and C++?
Me : (after a chuckle) I guess I made clear that I dont know C++. Do you think I can answer that?
I/v : Okay. Guess I dont have any quesions for you. You can leave now. We will get back to you shortly.

In around a week, I got the offer letter.

************************************************

My latest interview :
I/v : Hi, how are you doing today?
me : Well, not so good, I guess. No sleep for the last couple of nights and to make it worse, I ran out of coffee yesternight.
I/v : Is it some project for your current company.
me : Nope. I dont have no job right now. My contract with the previous company ended two weeks back and that's why I am here. Actually, I was trying to create a tiny OS that would have only what I need. But the damn thing crashes every time I try to load a specific reentrant function. Man, I am working my brains out, but still struck on this stupid thing. Guess I need a break.
I/v : Interesting.. Do you know anything about our company?
me : Oh yeah. I googled even before applying to you guys. In fact the details I got about this company are quite impressive. That's the main reason I applied for this company. I enjoy working with this sort of company and though I do have a couple of offers from xyz, zyx companies, I will appreciate if you guys selected me and will join here.
I/v : Guess I dont have much to ask. Your resume is stunning. Do you have any questions?
me : Yes. If I join here, what would be my office hours?
I/v : We are flexible with that. You can choose any time that suits you.
me : Gee. Thanks. Thats what I expect.
I got the offer immediately.

Can You Feel the Love Tonight

There's a calm surrender to the rush of day
When the heat of the rolling world can be turned away
An enchanted moment, and it sees me through
It's enough for this restless warrior just to be with you

And can you feel the love tonight
It is where we are
It's enough for this wide-eyed wanderer
That we got this far
And can you feel the love tonight
How it's laid to rest
It's enough to make kings and vagabonds
Believe the very best

There's a time for everyone if they only learn
That the twisting kaleidoscope moves us all in turn
There's a rhyme and reason to the wild outdoors
When the heart of this star-crossed voyager beats in time with yours

WARREN BUFFET

THE FOLLOWING IS A MAIL SENT TO ME BY A GENTLEMAN WHO HAD THE PLEASURE OF LISTENING TO WARREN BUFFET RECENTLY.

I had the good fortune to attend the 2008- Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders meeting at Omaha, Nebraska a few weeks back.

It was a wonderful experience listening to and learning from the Master Investor- Warren Buffett himself and all I can say is that he stands alone as the reigning deity of financial world's Mt Olympus!

The degree of humility and composure he exhibited, although he is the richest and most well respected human is stunning!

I tried to take some notes and would like to share with you some of the best questions and answers which came across during the conversation between we mortals and God.

Having read about him, observed him and worshipped him for a few years now, I think it is reasonable to believe that this guy is exactly what he seems: a plain-speaking, tee totaling man of uncrackable integrity who works really, really hard and sticks to his investing and management principles through boom and bust which makes him a freak of nature since he is above normal human tendencies. He is like a comet streaking through the heavens every 75 years or so.

The questions the shareholders threw at him for 7 continuous hours ranged from finances, life, religion, career, politics, sports and several other streams. And he answered everything with a Zen like calm and confidence.

Even if you are least bothered about investments and finances, I insist, Pl read on

******************************

What does it take to become a successful investor? Brilliance or Smartness?

Neither, Success in investing doesn't correlate with I.Q. Once you have ordinary intelligence, what you need is the temperament to control the urges that gets other people into trouble in investing.

When do you deicide to invest in a firm?

The best thing that happens to us is when a great company gets into temporary trouble. We want to buy them when they're on the operating table. (Mr. Buffett bought Coke when it had its biggest fiasco after launching New Coke; he bought American Express when it went through a loss making phase in the early 60's)

What do you look for in people when they come to sell their firms to you?

I don't look for the usual credentials such as an MBA, a pedigree (Harvard, Wharton), or cash reserves or market cap of their firm. What I look for is just a passion in their eyes; I think that's the key. A person who is hungry will always do well. I prefer it when people even after selling stay on and work for the firm; they are people who can't wait to get off their bed to get to work. Passion is everything; there is no replacement for innate interest.

Mr. Buffett, you told us that Berkshire Hathaway has $ 45 Billion in cash. Why aren't you investing?

Up until a few years back I had more ideas than money. Now I have more money than ideas.

When do you plan to retire?

I love my job; I love it so much that I tap dance to work. Mrs. B, the founder of Nebraska Furniture Mark worked until she was 104, she died within 6 months of her retirement, that's a lesson to all my managers, don't retire! I personally am going to work 6-7 years after I die, probably that's what they mean when they say- "Thinking out of the Box"!!

Why do stock market crashes happen?

Because of human nature for greed and insecurity. The 1970s were unbelievable. The world wasn't going to end, but businesses were being given away. Human nature has not changed. People will always behave in a manic-depressive way over time. They will offer great values to you."

What are the things that are taught wrong in Business school and the corporate world?

I like such open ended questions, I think Business schools should refrain from teaching their wards about profit making and profit making alone, it gives a sense of 1 dimensional outlook to the young students that loss is a curse. In reality, in the corporate world, failure and loss making are inevitable. The capital market without loss is like Christianity without hell. I think they should teach the student on how to buy a business, how to value a business? Not just on how to determine the price of a business. Because price is what you pay, value is what you get.

Do you still hate Technology stocks?

With Coke I can come up with a very rational figure for the cash it will generate in the future. But with the top 10 Internet companies, how much cash will they produce over the next 25 years? If you say you don't know, then you don't know what it is worth and you are speculating, not investing. All I know is that I don't know, and if I don't know, I don't invest."

How to think about Investing?

The first investment primer was written by Aesop in 600 B.C. He said, 'A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.' Aesop forgot to say when you get the two in the bush and what interest rates are; investing is simply figuring out your cash outlay (the bird in the hand) and comparing it to how many birds are in the bush and when you get them."

How do you feel after donating $ 40 Billion to the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation? You are a hero to us!

I feel nothing. I haven't sacrificed anything in life. I have had a good life. I donated after I turned 75. I think I admire those people who sacrifice their time, share their food and home, as the people to be emulated not me. Besides, what is money before a man's life?

What do you think are the pitfalls in donation?

I have never donated a dime to churches or other such organizations; I need to believe in something before I end up doing that. I have been observing the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation for years now and I am confident they will do a fantastic job of making use of the money. I am a big believer in Outsourcing, others believed in me as an Investor and gave their hard earned money to invest. I believe in Bill Gates, he is a better donor than me.

Why do you work from Omaha and not Wall Street, New York?

Wall Street is the only place where people alight from Rolls Royce to get advised by people who use the Public transportation system.

You seem to be so well read, tell us how it all started.

My father was a stock broker, so we had all these financial books in our library. He introduced me to those classics and I got into them. I am lucky that my father was not a fan of Playboy! Reading is the best habit you can get. Well, you can learn from teachers too, and have mentors but there are so many constraints attached- they will talk fast, talk slow, they might talk like a pro or they might be terrible communicators. Books are a different animal altogether, I love reading! The beauty about reading and learning is that the more you learn the more you want to learn.

People who join Berkshire Hathaway seldom leave. How do you get along well with all your executives?

I try to get quality people. I always say - Hire someone in your organization who is better than you are. If you do that, you build a company of giants. If you get people worse than yourself, you build a company of dwarfs. And do not try to do everything yourself. Delegate the jobs and look out of the window. The results will come. That's how you build institutions. It happens only when you empower others, believe in others. Iam an investor, Iam very secured at that, I have no clue how to make Coca-Cola or how to dole out credit cards (Mr. Buffett owns 8% of Coca-Cola and 13 % of American Express). I understand the wisdom of the aphorism that you cannot please all the people all the time. Of Course, you will always find qualities that you don't like in people around you, but if you observe carefully the love of the work unites you both. There is no point in being obsessive about a bad quality in a person, whom you otherwise respect.

I am a small time businessman from Dallas, Texas, what do I need to do to hit big time?

Be patient, Achieving your financial goals and dreams will not happen overnight. As much as we would all really love to accomplish our goals in a few years, this is an ongoing process. Defining your financial goals is not a one-time task; you need to keep adding new plans at different stages in your life. We all admire the skills of Olympic ice skaters, pro golfers, and concert pianists. But do we remember that they didn't acquire their skills overnight? They had to practice hours on end for years to achieve their dreams. The key to success is to continue learning throughout your life with a voracious appetite.

I think it is marvelous that you have had a golden run with investing, how did you do that?

My rule is to be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful. Besides, I call investing the greatest job in the world because you never have to swing. You stand at the plate; the pitcher throws you General Motors at 47! U.S. Steel at 39! And nobody calls a strike on you. There's no penalty except opportunity lost. All day you wait for the pitch you like; then when the fielders are asleep, you step up and hit it. Stay dispassionate and be patient. You're dealing with a lot of silly people in the marketplace; it's like a great big casino and everyone else is boozing. If you can stick with drinking Coke, you should be OK. First the crowd is boozy on optimism and buying every new issue in sight. The next moment it is boozy on pessimism, buying gold bars and predicting another Great Depression, most people get interested in stocks when everyone else is. The time to get interested is when no one else is. You can't buy what is popular and do well.

Mr. Buffett you have seen so many crashes and recessions, your take on facing recessions and stock market crashes?

If past history was all there was to the game, the richest people would be librarians. Every scenario is different. But always remember, Tough times do not last. Tough people do.

What is the 1 biggest advice you would impart to a young investor like me?

Think for a moment that you are given a car and told this is the only car you would get for the rest of your life. Then you would make sure that you car is taken care of well, it is oiled and detailed every now and then. You would make sure that it never gets rusted, and you would garage it. Think of yourself as that car. You just get 1 body, 1 mind and 1 soul. Take care of it well. Invest in yourself that would be my advice.

You personally know many of the Financial executives who are engineers of the current turmoil in the financial world, surprisingly even after record losses, those executives receive astronomical salaries and bonuses and arrogantly declare that they deserve it, why dint you advice them from making such decisions and what's your view on their justification for their pay?

I like sharing my ideas but don't like imposing my ideas on anybody. It doesn't make sense and is a waste of time. If somebody has decided that they know everything that is there to know, nobody can help them. The best way to learn and succeed is to know that we know nothing. There is an entire universe out there and still some of us think we can know everything. In the world of investing a few people after making some money tend to imagine they are invincible and great. This is the worst thing that could happen to any investor, because it surely means that the investor will end up taking unnecessary risks and end up losing everything – arrogance, ego and overconfidence are very lethal. Personally I don't feel too comfortable with too much extravagance, because I always think like an investor. My thought process doesn't see a lot of value in a fancy car or a designer suit. Thinking like an investor always is very important to bring in a sense of discipline and focus. Before reading balance sheets and investing you need to make sure your outlook and mindset is that of an investor. Never let ego, arrogance and over-confidence control you - not just as an investor but also as a human being. You will never have internal peace if you are unable to look at everybody around you with love, compassion and understanding. Irrespective of who the person is, he or she can teach you something you don't know. I have learnt so much from people all around me and I wouldn't have been able to learn all these wonderful things if I had not spoken to them with a smile. To quote Sir Isaac Newton- If I have seen farther than others, it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants.

It was a 7 hour conversation and I could just capture some of the best questions and answers. As 37,000+ dazed, amazed and grateful shareholders trooped out of the stadium after the meeting, I found myself recalling one of my favorite quotes-

"A man has to learn that he cannot command things, but that he can command himself; that he cannot coerce the wills of others, but that he can mold and master his own will: and things serve him who serves truth; people seek guidance of him who is master of himself".

Thanks Warren!

Harp - Beautiful performance by Cecile Corbel

One more, you will like it...

G-20 or 420

The "Group of 20" nations met in Washington over the weekend. The weather was cloudy and cool. The winds were blowing west-by-north-west at 14 miles per hour. But what came out was mostly hot air. Stale, hot air.

President Bush who is destined - unless saved by some miracle - to go on record as the worst President in the history of modern day USA laid the foundation for this nothingness.
Before the meeting began President Bush reminded us all that this financial crisis was not a failure of capitalism - there was no need to discourage financial innovation with excessive regulation.
Sure, the world needs a lot more financial innovation to be wrapped around the greed and slimy business practices of the financial geniuses.

The Europeans wanted more global oversight, more regulation. Eventually, the G-20 came out with a list of 20 points: a promise to do more and put in action with a notice that "we will meet again by April 30, 2009, to review the implementation of the principles and decisions agreed today".

Doctor, what's the problem?
But before any doctor sets forth a prescription, there must be a clear understanding of the disease. A treatment can only be effective when one understands the illness and identifies the cure.

So, what are the events that led us to where we are? What are the crises that led to a dinner and weekend meeting of the leaders of 20 countries that represent about 90% of the global GDP and 75% of the world's population?

Cost of Living in UAE.. ( Dubai )

Cost of Living in UAE.. ( Dubai )

Ahlan Dubai....... Welcome Dubai ........
With so many Indians hopping on to the next flight to Dubai (or U.A.E in general) to make their dreams happen...... ..life would turn out to be a shocker here. The common problem for youth in India is that they want to make too much money in too little time. They are willing to leave India on the first offer from any country of repute (or even without repute) without considering the pros and cons. As for the millions of U.A.E aspirants in India ..........guys hold on do a self assessment based on the under mentioned facts:-
· Just don't multiply the AED salary by 11 and convert the same into rupee earnings. That would be the first of the many mistakes you are likely to make. The conversion if at all should be done for savings and not gross earnings.
· If you a married person, consider the cost of family accommodation in U.A.E and more importantly in Dubai . The minimum requirement of a one BHK (bedroom, hall, kitchen) flat would cost you a minimum of AED 5,000/- per month (not per annum,) any where in downtown Dubai . Add a minimum of 15-25% annual increments in rent. Don't expect the salaries to rise by even half that %.
· If you are smart enough to realize that you can look for apartments outside Dubai(Sharjah, Ajman, RAK) to save AED 500 - 750 per month in rent , please allow yourself three to four hours for commuting every day(given the present traffic situation, which can only degrade with influx of millions of immigrants every year).Add that to a normal 10 hours day would mean you would end up spending around 14-15 hours a day on job......and you thought family life would be so much fun in Dubai.
· Be prepared to shell out AED 100/- for a routine check up at doctors in UAE ( that is if your company does not cover you with health insurance) . If you are lucky you will not fall ill, but god forbid if you do, then you will have a big hole in your pocket.
· If you aren't used to summers of north India and hail from places like Shimla, then you are in for a treat of your lifetime. Temperatures can run up to 50 degrees on a normal sunny afternoon and such days are pretty regular. And did I mention the humidity levels of 95% ........I am sure I did.
· If you don't have children you are lucky......bcos if you have 2-3 children going to school...... add at least AED 12,000 (per annum per child) to the cost of living in U.A.E
· You know that petrol here is cheaper and so would be the taxies .......try taking a cab from airport to your hotel ........the meter would touch AED 75-100/- before you will be able to make yourself comfortable in the Camry.
· You might have the fanciest of all cars available here, but when it comes to parking the same, you might regret buying one.
Imagine roaming around the streets of Dubai for 1 hour just to find a parking space....... ....alas. ...even that's not free........ .don't forget to display your parking ticket ......else a fine awaits you.
Parking fee comes to AED 2 per hour for all main roads toll collections also there !!!!!!!!
Last but not the least of all woes is a triple call rate to your loved ones in India . INR 30 per minute from U.A.E to India .........whereas as INR 8 per minute from India to UAE ........it must give you an idea what awaits you in Dubai . Don't you dare think you can use skype in Dubai ....... ..guys its banned and its illegal..... ...even sites like Orkut are banned here.......so much so for the communication .
So if you are fascinated by the growing number of glam malls in Dubai .........the ever-changing skyline ............ . all the hype and glory that surrounds this place ...........the bollywood stars flocking to Dubai every Thursday night .........the cute cars .........the chic cafés ........BURJ DUBAI....... .BURJ AL ARAB ......Dubai Marina; think twice buddies !!!!!! (Remember what is yours is what you take home after a lifetime in Dubai ).No matter how long you stay here you will still be an expatriate ......no UAE passport .........no home.
Trust me, there's nothing like home!!!
