Do you know any BSc/BE/Mtech/MCA freshers with Java skills + aptitude, who are willing to work for Rs 5K for first few months @ Bangalore. Message me for details!  I have few folks working for free! Technically I have to charge for giving training. It's for a startup! Prefer freshers with some basic Java skills to train them in Telecom Domain. Give your (or the person's) online profile... create a quick and simple online profile @ or connect with me on

Looking back 1,2,3

Career of the last 21+ years has been wavy.

I do remember that I would have stayed in India forever, if not for abroad options.

It did help.

What could be the difference?

Starting at a 3K salary right after college and getting say 8 - 10% increment and over the years, could have given be only a small amount of savings.  Can anybody do the math - assuming the savings is about 30% after taxes?

But these job changes for the want of challenge and the own startup biz has given be lot to think about. With about 17+ years of paid experience and 6+ years abroad, has given me the courage to venture out.

You enter with conviction to make it a success, and it is very tough to manage the roadblocks. This time it was for long and didnt work out.

Getting back to work is the option I am looking for now.  Cannot idle.  Taking it easy now....

My profile is here .. http://vijayashankar.emurse.com

I have reached out to many friends in vain to make myself busy.  Some have moved abroad, settled there with many ventures... but I dont know what stops them from helping! These are the friends who wanted free equity on the ventures that I had started...

Utilizing the knowledge and skills are the major points here. At times I thought about immigrating back to USA or Canada. Work or Investor based.  Having experience in running 7 ventures, directly or indirectly... and the related benefits having been reaped, want to make a mark in life!

Let me know.

A new Tamil blogger Karthik

/****பஸ் எறிவிட்டார்கள்.நான் திரும்பும் நேரத்தில் சட்டென்று அப்பா இறங்கினார். என்னை நெருங்கிய அப்பா, என் முகத்தை பார்த்தார். சில வினாடிகளுக்கு பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்தார்.
Take Care ! ****/
I did cry reading the blog entry (sentimental) written by Karthik thinking about my Dad, who passed away last October.
Some sort of similar incident, happened in my life too! I was sort of not in talking terms, forcibly choosing Engineering against the Medical seat, I had got. (pricey in those days of 1986). Worked out OK. Well I was a days scholar.
The only wish I could not complete was a foreign degree, that my Dad wanted me to get. Inspite of having admisions to US universites, after B.E., I wanted to work for some time, before hitting the road to US, which happened in the form of a job.

What does the CTO do?

As a person playing the role of a CTO along with my Delivery management activities, I feel - first and foremost - would be the Technology suitable for the product/service a client would be benefited from. No two clients pay the same, but they get their value for money - in tweaks for them. The second best, would be shaping up the resources (most of them need training and a roadmap - a path for success) to get up fast from mistakes, with proper training, which is an investment. Finally, whatever we do, the management buy in is very much needed. After all they are the ones, who have the business running, and they have to give the returns back to the customers/shareholders.

Recruiting Top Management

Businessweek has a nice refresher on recruiting top management. While it primarily seems to be written for large companies, the lessons are equally relevant to startups. Of course, there are some additional points one needs to keep in mind when recruiting for startups:

  • Sell a personal vision - not just of where the company wants to be, but also why the prospective candidate should get involved. Money? Significance? Career advancement? Broad-skilling?
  • Build credibility - let others speak for you. Customers? Investors? Advisors?
  • Prepare well - have a detailed view on why you need this person - is he going to feel overqualified once he comes in?
  • Hire the best - this is a motherhood statement, but one which cant be emphasized enough, especially for startups.

Any others that have been useful in your experience? I have benefited from it, and would like to join someone who does this.

Most of the points are valid. Being an entrepruener myself, I have tried and tired of startups and funds, and more dearth of them, the cost implication would be a matter of concern.
It is alright to recruit someone with a high challenging appetite, who might also want some big dough! But he should sort of do some additional job, that you may not
Say you are hriing a CTO with 15 years experience, he or she should not only do the PM role, also the QM role as well and do a bit of AM with the clients, saving the cost involved.
So if you pay less, the guy gets dejected, lulls, switches the job. Period. You startup remains as "one". Pay the cost and get the best!
These are just experiences that I have personally gone thru. Feedbacks?

Email from Boss!

It's half past 8 in the office but the lights are still on...
PCs still running, coffee machines still buzzing...
And who's at work? Most of them??? Take a closer look...

All or most specimens are??
Something male species of the human race...

Look closer... again all or most of them are bachelors...

And why are they sitting late? Working hard? No way!!!
Any guesses???
Let's ask one of them...
Here's what he says... "What's there 2 do after going home...Here we get to surf, AC, phone, food, coffee that is why I am working late...Importantly no bossssssss!!!!!!!!!!!"

This is the scene in most research centers and software companies and other off-shore offices.

Bachelors "Time-passing" during late hours in the office just bcoz they say they've nothing else to do...
Now what r the consequences...

"Working" (for the record only) late hours soon becomes part of the institute or company culture.

With bosses more than eager to provide support to those "working" late in the form of taxi vouchers, food vouchers and of course good feedback, (oh, he's a hard worker... goes home only to change..!!).
They aren't helping things too...

To hell with bosses who don't understand the difference between "sitting" late and "working" late!!!

Very soon, the boss start expecting all employees to put in extra working hours.

So, My dear Bachelors let me tell you, life changes when u get married and start having a family... office is no longer a priority, family is... and
That's when the problem starts... b'coz u start having commitments at home too.

For your boss, the earlier "hardworking" guy suddenly seems to become a "early leaver" even if u leave an hour after regular time... after doing the same amount of work.

People leaving on time after doing their tasks for the day are labeled as work-shirkers...

Girls who thankfully always (its changing nowadays... though) leave on time are labeled as "not up to it". All the while, the bachelors pat their own backs and carry on "working" not realizing that they r spoiling the work culture at their own place and never realize that they wuld have to regret at one point of time.

So what's the moral of the story??
* Very clear, LEAVE ON TIME!!!
* Never put in extra time " unless really needed "
* Don't stay back un-necessarily and spoil your company work culture which will in turn cause inconvenience to you and your colleagues.
There are hundred other things to do in the evening..

Learn music...

Learn a foreign language...

Try a sport... TT, cricket.........

Importantly, get a girl friend or boy friend, take him/her around town...

* And for heaven's sake, net cafe rates have dropped to an all-time low (plus, no fire-walls) and try cooking for a change.

Take a tip from the Smirnoff ad: *"Life's calling, where are you??"*

Please pass on this message to all those colleagues and please do it before leaving time, don't stay back till midnight to forward this!!!

IT'S A TYPICAL ASIAN MENTALITY THAT WORKING FOR LONG HOURS MEANS VERY HARD WORKING & 100% COMMITMENT ETC.

PEOPLE WHO REGULARLY SIT LATE IN THE OFFICE DONT KNOW TO MANAGE THEIR TIME. SIMPLE !

Regards,

Your Boss

Multiple offers and dilemma

Multiple offers and dilemma

Definitely, things are tough, if you have made up your mind to join a small company as a VP with a decent jump and another offer comes in... Dilemma... things might get complicated if one more offer comes in, as we end up talking to multiple parties before the firm and final offer comes in.

Also you have to look into the matter of the larger company and living in the same place too! Very seriously... no shifting, no school hassles, no pain.... (but the gain is what is looked at... )

Yes matters gets complicated if, the new offer is same or better from the first offer,  accepts all the notice period, plus the sign on bonus of 2 months gross salary, and ensures that your long term on site trip with family would be taken care for atleast one year.... of course with 10 times more stock options on signing on day!

So much for the IT industry issues and the run along with it. I would feel very dejected to say NO to anyone who has offered me. Since IT industry is so networked, and everyone knows everyone, it would be tough when you cross paths later.

I still feel and laugh at the interview question (first one almost) "Why do you want to change your job?"  while they were after me at the right fit! (with the baiters/consultants running around)

Always I do tell that I dont plan anything beyond 5 years.... Also, may be, I might revive Sharon Software Systems later.

Let us wait and see, one more day to decide! All are subject to getting the relieving letter on time, with no worries. But both companies wouldnt know that I have already quit....(mentally)

Differentiation is the key

Differentiation is the key to get hired, retain talent. The HR guys typically tell about the soap story (why so many varieties but the same function)

I have come across, far-fetching, mouth-balling co's who promise a lot.

There is one company who claims to be one of the best employers in the world, couldnt afford to pay the living allowance more than $800 a month with a commune apt acco provided, for the people visiting from India to USA (for all levels) $30 per day actual, but $100 deducted over a month for the food-stuff provided at work - compared to a previous employer I worked with who could pay $120 per day other than acco...

There is one company who always hires the person one level below and just try to match the salary, and never revise, but instead dole out only ESOPs - cash crunch?

Recently a company was in touch with me to hire me at a CTO level, and they were proceeding as if I was the one for them. One particular day, I was to meet them, tix were not booked, but had to delay by a day owing to my Dental pain. They couldnt wait. No calls to date. Imagine, If I had joined them, what would happen to my personal works etc?

So employees take the family first route and employers the employee first route. It may not go well, if this is not followed and troubled waters in terms of referral etc would happen.
