The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Developers

If you want to achieve your highest aspirations and overcome your greatest challenges, identify and apply the principle or natural law that governs the results you seek.  How we apply a principle will vary greatly and will be determined by our unique strengths, talents, and creativity, but, ultimately, success in any endeavor is always derived from acting in harmony with principles to which the success is tied.  This advice comes from Steven Covey in his best-selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  If you haven't read this book yet, you must.  It's about effecting change from the inside out for success in both your personal and professional life by aligning your values with principles through practicing seven habits.  Before reading this book, I felt like a passenger on a career freight-train. like something put in motion that I was powerless to control.  What I was practicing in my career, my habits, was misaligned with my values, and my values were misaligned with unmovable principles.  Although I was powerless over the career train, I came to realize I had the power to choose which train I was on.  So here I am at a company that allows me to follow my passion: developing software.

The 7 Habits book is broadly focused, and it made me think about habits specific to my profession.  What do those software developers that I consider effective (if not brilliant) have in common?  What values drive their decisions and what habits do they practice that make them successful?  Here are the seven habits that I think effective developers practice:

Passionate

The most brilliant people I've worked with are passionate about what they do.  They aren't driven by money and fame and, I say this with tongue in cheek, if they didn't have families to feed, would develop software without compensation.  If I had two candidates for a development position, I'd rather hire a less-experienced person with passion than a more experienced person without.  If you aren't passionate about software development, find what you are passionate about and follow that path.

Able to Learn, Unlearn and Re-learn

I believe that learning is an extension of passion, and effective developers operate in a continuum of improvement and innovation.  They learn from their and others' mistakes and don't apply old solutions to new problems just because they worked before.  Effective developers follow technology, but are careful to not let new approaches become solutions looking for a problem.

Balance Principle and Practice

Principle and practice are the Yin and Yang of software development.  Effective developers don't design impractical solutions for the sake of principle and don't implement solutions without overarching values.  They are willing to compromise based on time, cost, scope and quality constraints, but can also obtain compromise from others based on sound principles.

Keep It Simple Software (KISS)

Effective developers implement the simplest possible thing that will work while not painting themselves into a corner.  They don't implement anything more than is needed right now, remaining mindful about what might be needed in the future.  Effective developers know that the less moving parts there are, the less likely it will break and favor elegance and simplicity over convoluted cleverness.

If You Don't Know the Answer, Know Someone Who Does

Software developers aren't renown for their social prowess, but some of the most effective developers I know are excellent at networking.  If you give a random 100 question test to a group of people, no one individual will score 100%, but collectively, with few exceptions, the group can answer all the questions correctly.  There is so much technology, so many areas of speciality, you can only be an expert on one, maybe two subject areas.  Effective developers know the limit of their knowledge, aren't afraid to admit when they don't know something and have many friends and colleagues in their network they can reach out to for help.

Focus on Value

Effective developers understand the forces driving the project, its stakeholders and their goals.  Using this knowledge to guide their decision making, they focus on delivering tangible value to their customers over anything else.  Effective developers prioritize work based on its value--the so called "bang for the buck," and avoid projects and features they don't believe in.

Puts the Needs of the Many Before the Needs of the One

I've seen small teams accomplish extraordinary things; it's amazing what "two guys and a laptop" can accomplish.  Call it teamwork or synergy or whatever you like, when a group of people put common goals before their own, they converge like light into a laser beam.  Contrast this with the arrogant, rogue and cowboy developers who go against team standards or design intents because "that's how I do it" or "that's how you should do it."  The message they are really sending is "I am smarter than the team."

These seven habits give me something to work towards and keep me focused.  I only had room for seven habits in this article, and I'm sure you can think of many more or define effective in your own way.  The important thing is to take a value-driven approach to your software development career and do intentional things that move you towards your definition of success.

1. When you come up with an idea for a product, validate it with potential customers
2. Build an early prototype and get more feedback (people can give concrete feedback when they see early implementations)
3. Try to understand the feedback deeper (you can ask why they want a particular feature and see whether you understand the hidden requirements as well)
4. Normally if 2 or more customers ask for a feature, it means either it does not exist in your product or if it does, not very easy to figure out how to use it. Either way, it is an important step in iterating the product releases.
5. The early users may be entirely internal, but the process is similar. The closer you are to actual users expectations, the better.

நல்ல வேலை என் பாக்கட்டில் பர்ஸ் பாத்திரம்... சாளுக்கியாவில் சாப்பாடு எதோவென்று இறங்கியது... சினிமா பிளானும் கட். அந்த சமயத்தில், ஆட்டோ எடுத்து, அலங்கார் பிளாசா சென்றோம்.

அது முதல் பெங்களூரில் எங்கு சென்றாலும் ஆட்டோ தான். ( ஆகஸ்ட் 1999 இல் கார் வாங்கியவுடன், முடிந்த வரை கார் பயணம், சில இடங்களுக்கு கார் நிறுத்தம் ப்ராப்ளம் என்றபடியால் - அப்போதே சர்ச் ஸ்ட்ரீட் குளறுபடி தான் ).

திருப்பூருக்கு போனால் மட்டும், லோகல் ட்ரிப் பஸ். மனைவி ஊருக்கு போய் வருவது கார் தான் என்றாலும், சில சமயம், நான் வேண்டுமென்ற பஸ்சில் செல்ல ஆசைப்பட்டு செல்வோம்.

பஸ் பயணம் மீது ஒரு காதல் தான்...

நான்கு வருடம் நான் பி.எஸ்.ஜி டெக்கில் படித்த காலத்தில், தினமும் 1986 முதல் 1990 வரை, காலை ஏழு மணி பஸ் தான். சரியாக எட்டே காலுக்கு காலேஜ் வாசலில் இறக்கி விடுவார்கள். வீடு திரும்புவது, சாயந்திரம் ட்ரெயினில்... மதியம் வகுப்பு இல்லாவிட்டால், உடனே ஒரு மணி சி.டி.சி பஸ்!

பஸ் ஏறி உட்கார்ந்த வுடன் ஒரு மப்போடு தூக்கம் வரும். கண்டக்டர் சரியாக எழுப்பி விட்டுவிடுவார். கலங்கலான கண்களுடன், நன்றி கலந்த பார்வை செலுத்திவிட்டு இறங்குவேன்!

எக்சாம் சமயம் எல்லாம், திறந்து வைத்த புத்தகம், பாட்டு சத்தம் என படிப்பு. மதியம் எக்சாம் இருக்கும் சமயம், 12 மணிக்கு கிளம்பினால், இரண்டு மணி எக்சாம் எழுத சரியாக இருக்கும், மூன்று மணி நேரம் எழுதிவிட்டு ஆறு பத்து ட்ரெயின் பீளமேட்டில் பிடிப்பேன். ஒரு ரூபாய்க்கு வருத்த கப்பி சிப்ஸ் வாங்கினால் கொருக்கிக்கொண்டே ஒரு புத்தகம் படித்துக்கொண்டு, திருப்பூர் இறங்க எழேகால் ஆகும். பி.எஸ்.ஜி ஆர்ட்ஸ் மக்கள் சிலர் பழக்கமானது அப்படி தான். சில சமயம், சுஜாதா, சுபா, ராஜேஷ்குமார் புத்தகங்கள் துணைக்கு வரும்...

ஜி.ஆர்.ஈ., டோபுல், ஜி.மேட்., கேட் என எக்சாம் பேப்பர்கள் பற்றி பேசுவோம். அப்படி கிடைத்த ஒரு நண்பர், இப்போது என் மனைவியின் ஒன்று விட்ட தங்கை மாப்பிள்ளை. திருப்பூரில் நல்ல பணக்கார வியாபாரிகள், இப்போது கண்டுக்கொள்வதில்லை. கல்யாணம் சமயமும் தெரிந்ததாக காட்டிக்கொள்ளவில்லை. என்ன வீரா?

ஒரு முறை ஆறாம் செமஸ்டர் சமயம், அவினாஷி தாண்டி தெக்கலூர் அருகில் ஒரு பெரிய ஆக்சிடன்ட், 1989ம் வருடம். ஒரு மணி நேரம் வண்டி லேட். இரண்டரைக்கு தான் எக்சாம் ஹாலில் இருந்தேன். எப்படியோ அந்த பேப்பர் பாஸ் செய்தேன்...

அரக்கரை ஏறியவுடன், கடைசி சீட்டில் அமர்ந்துக்கொண்டோம். ஏசி காற்றில் குழந்தைகள் நன்றாக சந்தோஸித்தனர்! நல்ல வேலை பஸ்சில் பிக் பாக்கட்ஸ் இல்லை... ( இருக்கிறதா தெரியவில்லை )

அலங்கார் பிளாசா அருகில் இறங்கி சுற்றினோம்..... சில துணிகள், கண்டி ஸ்வீட்சில் காஜு பக்கோடா வாங்கினோம்.

மீண்டும், பத்து நிமிட நடை தூரத்தில், இருக்கும் பேருந்து நிறுத்தத்தில் 365 J ஏறி, வீடு சென்றடைந்தோம்!

என்ன இருந்தாலும் பேருந்து பயணம் மாதிரி கார் அல்லது ஆட்டோ பயணம் இருக்காது!

எழுத்துப்பணி இரு வகை... ஜனரஞ்சகம் மற்றும் மாற்று பாணி. இரண்டிலும் வாசகர் பார்வைக்கு தான் (வேண்டி விரும்பி செல்கிறது).

இருபத்தைந்து வருடம் முன்னாள், ராஜேஷ்குமார், சுபா போன்றோர் எழுதும் க்ரைம் நாவல்கள் விடாமல் படித்தேன். சுஜாதா பின் ஒரு தாக்குதல் ஏற்படுத்தினார். கம்ப்யுட்டர் துறை பற்றி விரிவாக அவர் எழுதியது, நான் எட்டாம் வகுப்பு படித்த சமயம் 1981 - 82.

சிலர் எழுத்தார்கள், எதோ எழுத வேண்டும் என்று எழுதுகிறார்கள். சிலர், வாசகர் திருப்திக்காக எழுதுகிறார்கள்.

நான் எழுதும் வகை, என் மன அலைகளை சொல்லும் விதம்...

இப்போது சில காரணங்களினால், நிறைய நேரம் ( கட்டுகோப்பாக செலவு செய்ய முடியவில்லை ) உள்ளது...

நல்லபடியாக சில பகிர்வுகளை தொடரவேண்டும் என்பது ஆவல்.

எல்லோருக்கும் பிடித்த மாதிரி எழுதும் ஜனரஞ்சக படைப்புக்கள், வார பத்திரிக்கையில் தான் வருகின்றனவே.

உங்கள் கவிதைகள் ஐந்து ஒரு தளத்தில் படித்தேன். நன்று. ஒரு அனுமாச்ய அமைதி எற்படுதியிருப்பவை அவை. நான் 1989 சமயம், பி.எஸ்.ஜி தொழில்நுட்ப கல்லூரியில், மண்டைக்காட்டு கலவரங்கள் பற்றி எழுதி பரிசு பெற்றது ஞாபகம் வந்து நிற்கின்றது...

எனக்கு புரியாத விஷயம்... தமிழ் பேசும் ஒரே உறவு காரணமாக, ஸ்ரீலங்கா தமிழர்களுக்கு சப்போர்ட் செய்வது கொஞ்சம் அபத்தமாக இருக்குது. அதை வைத்து பெரும் விசயமாக அரசியல் செய்வது, அதை விட அபத்தம்.  வருத்தமாக இருக்குது. நம் வீடு, நம் நாடு என்று பார்த்து, ஒரு நிலை அடைந்த பின், மற்றவர்களுக்கு அனுதாபப்படுவது தான் உலக நியதி.

ஒரு உதாரணம், விமானத்தில் ஆக்சிஜன் குறைவு ஏற்பட்டால் முதலில் நீங்கள் மாஸ்க்கை அணிந்துக்கொண்டு தான், பிறகு குழந்தைக்கு அணிவிக்க வேண்டும் என்கிறது ஆவணம்...

இன்னொரு உதாரணம், மலையேறுகிறார்கள் இருவர். எவரெஸ்ட் உச்சி அடைய ஒரு நிமிடம் இருக்கும் தருவாயில், ஒருவன் அவனது தவறால் கிழே விழ எத்தனிக்க, அவனை காப்பாற்றுவது நியாயமா, இல்லை இலக்கை எட்டுவது மனு நீதி தர்மமா? இல்லை அப்படியே காப்பாற்றினாலும், மலையேறும் சாஸ்திரப்படி, இருவர் எடையை ஒரு கயிறு தாங்காது... முயற்சி தேவையில்லை.

மேற்கூறிய சிறு கூற்று இப்போது நடக்கும் இலங்கை நிலைக்கும் பொருந்தும்.

ஆணவம், மக்கள் பணம் சூறையாடல் ( எதற்கு வேண்டும் பங்க்கரில் நீச்சல் குளம்? ) , போதை மருந்து கடத்தல், ஆள் கடத்தல் ( அசைலம் கேசுகள் ) , மகனுக்கு தலைமை பதவி... இப்படியிருக்கும் ஒரு வஞ்சக கூட்டம் தான் அவர்களுக்கு தீர்வா?

நார்வே மூலம், குறைந்த பட்சம், ஒரு மாநில அந்தஸ்து ( சுய ஆட்சி ) கிடைத்திருக்கும் வாய்ப்பையும் இழந்து தவிக்கின்றனர் தமிழர், அங்கு.

இப்போது இருக்கும் நிலைமை, அங்கு உள்நாட்டு பிரச்சனையை என்று காரணம், வேறு எந்த நாடும், தட்டி கேட்க்க முடியாது... அங்குள்ளவர்கள் உயிர் பிழைத்தால் போதும் என்பது தான் பெரும் விஷயம் ஆகிறது.. ராஜபக்சே செய்வது நியாயம் இல்லை. பிணைக்கைதிகளை ( பரிதாப மக்களை ) பிடித்து வைத்திருக்கும் கூட்டம் செய்வதும் நியாயம் இல்லை.

மற்ற நாட்டில் ( கனடா, யுரோப் மற்றும் மலேசியா - சிங்கப்பூரை தவிர்த்து..) இருக்கும் தமிழரின் நிலைமையும் பரிதாபத்துக்குரியது...

Maruti Wagon R mileage

For Maruti Wagon R Lxi I am getting about 8 KMPL with AC in Bangalore city traffic (South Bangalore, so not many signal). Without AC I get about 10 KMPL. How do I measure? I fill 20 litres everytime and reset the mileage meter (not Odometer!). Next time, at the start of the day, if near Empty, I note the reading. Never crossed 200.

May be if i drive for long distance, I might get that advertised 17 KMPL.! (under test conditions blah blah ;-) )

I have also checked with Kalyani where I bought, and after thorough analysis they suggested that I am getting the right mileage!

Earlier I drove an Esteem for 8+ years that I bought in 1999 after returning from US. I used to get similar mileage. Reason: Same Engine. 1100 cc.

5. Super Volcano

Yellowstone National Park in the United States is famous for its thermal springs and Old Faithful geyser. Rock The Vote

It is too easy to forget what it really means to be the world's largest democracy, especially for those of us who remain relatively unaffected by the vagaries of Indian politics because we can buy our way out of most problems the government can't solve.

For the past few decades, India's educated elite have taken less interest in politics than the uneducated masses. And this has probably been the greatest reason why India's infrastructure, health and basic education have maintained 3rd world standards even while the educated elite have rocketed up to international levels of wealth. India's intellectuals have been too busy making money for themselves to bother with societal issues, and so some of the most challenging problems in India remain unsolved. But it is time that we educated elite realize how valuable our freedom is to our continued prosperity; the world's largest democracy will crumble if we do not begin to participate actively in its well being. We must understand that the plight of the uneducated masses is our own plight, and that it is our responsibility to raise all of India to greatness. If we - who can read and write, who understand why minority rights must be protected, why women should have equal standing as men, and why religious tolerance is essential - do not vote, then how do we expect our democracy to continue to function in a sensible manner? Uneducated voters are more likely to be swayed by manipulative politicians with corrupt agendas and are less likely to understand which government policies will benefit them in the long-run. If we hope to see any improvement in things like water quality, health, education, and sexual freedom, we must make our voices heard by ballot, not just on blogs. A successful democracy encourages voting by all its people, but it demands the active participation of its most educated.

So GO ROCK THE VOTE in the 2009 General Elections!!!

A few of you have requested me to give my thoughts on the qualifications of the various candidates. I started to write a post along those lines but quickly realized that most of my judgments are not really based on outward qualifications or claims. All the candidates say they want to improve water quality, increase jobs, use technology, etc., so what's really different about them? Although we have always been taught that we should vote for candidates "on the issues", it's nearly impossible to do so when there are hundreds of people all saying basically the same thing. Of course there are some pretty significant differences (e.g., fundamentalist jackasses saying they will cut the throats of India's Muslims after they are elected), but most of the publicly-approved talking points all have a similar quality of sounding too good to be true. The truth is, all politicians say manipulative things and promise too much. Such is the nature of politics. So how do we wade through all the shit? Should we really vote "on the issues", or should we just cave into our temptation to vote for the guy (or gal) we'd most like to have chai with? When I choose a politician, I generally ask myself the following questions:

1. is he / she a good person (or, does he / she seem like a scummy, corrupt bastard)?
2. is he / she at least as intelligent as I am?
3. is he / she at least as educated as I am?
4. is he / she open to new perspectives?
5. is he / she tolerant towards opposing beliefs (or, is he / she a fundamentalist)?
6. does he / she understand economics?
7. does he / she genuinely view poor people as humans who deserve basic rights (or, is he / she just trying to win their votes)?
8. is he / she aware of the world, and the importance of our country's relationship to other countries?


I do not give my vote to anyone who does not pass with a "yes" answer to all of these questions. So I guess it's a bit of both - I choose on broad issues and on my own affinity towards the person, with a recognition that no politician is perfect and that it's okay to disagree on some things, as long as we can agree on the most important. Ultimately, I vote for the people I trust to make laws and spend money in ways that are consistent with my beliefs about what is right and wrong, what is important for my personal freedom and what is best for my fellow citizens now and in the future.

பெங்களூரும் வெய்யிலும்

நான் பிறந்து (கோத்தகிரி) வளர்ந்த திருப்பூர் வெய்யிலை இப்போது பெங்களூரில் பார்க்கிறேன். பாட்டி வீட்டிற்க்கு பெங்களூர் வரும் சமயம் ( 70's - 80's) இவ்வளவு வெய்யில் இருந்தது இல்லை.

சென்னையில் இருந்த வரை ஏசி இருந்தது. பெங்களூரில் எதற்கு என்று இருந்து விட்டோம். இப்போது தெரிகிறது. ஏசி வாங்கலாம் என்றாலும், கம்பிகளை அறுத்து ஏசி பிட் செய்யணும். வீட்டு ஓனர் ஒத்துக்கொள்ளவில்லை.

இப்போது குழந்தைகளும் வீட்டில் விடுமுறையில் உள்ளனர். எப்போதும் டிவி தான். கொடுமை. வெய்யில் குறைந்தால் வெளியில் விளையாட செல்கிறார்கள்.

ட்ராயிங் க்ளாசுக்கு அனுப்பினோம். அங்கு பேன் காற்று குறைவு, உப்புசம் என்று போகவில்லை. ஆயிரம் ரூபாய் கட்டியது பனால்.

தினமும் மனைவி ஸ்நாக்ஸ் வாங்ககிறார், வாரும் ஒரு முறை வாங்கியது இப்படி ஆகிவிட்டது. ரிசசென் காலத்தில் இப்படி...

I get hundreds of requests in a month to analyze horoscopes and give suggestions.

Shani (Sani) Dasa and its effects for 19 years

I try to help as much as I can, and for abled, I request them to donate to a charitable cause. For each chart I spend about an hour, along with spousal inputs.

As you would have read through my blog posts, about my philanthropy, I help kids for books etc costing about Rs 1000/- per kid for a year. Personally I help 5 kids minimum. There is no trust, and money is handed out to the poor.

I have also written about the philanthropic nature about my community in building schools and charitable activities etc.
So going by the principle, "There is nothing called Free Lunch ", you have to be able to give something to get something.

Lately I have been getting requests from abled folks, to get a free reading. This in spite of me telling about, my expectations in the mails they have read. How could I value the need of a person, who is sitting abroad and cannot donate $20 to a poor kid in India?

Interesting case on Shani Dasa

Recently I had a request to look at the chart of a person on the effects Shani is causing.   

I was told that from Jan 2001 he has Shani Dasa. ( It was actually Sani Sade Sati ) 7.5 years of trouble as traditional folks say.

Here are the facts. Note - I am keeping the name and place of birth confidential.

                       DOB         01-10-1980
                       TOB         13 hours 10 minutes
                       Co ordinates      9°10'11"N 76°43'48"E

I erected the chart using JHora 7.3 with KP Ayanamsa correction.

Looking at his chart, using KP principles, I can clearly tell that he is suitable for EDUCATION line only based on the presence of SUN and MOON in the 10th house. Also with presence of Mercury in the10th, it sort of un-helps a stable Computer Software career if desired. CONSULTANCY on short term basis would be the other possible job. SHARING knowledge and ANALYSIS work could be the key. (The other career I have seen with this combination is LAW with RAM JETHMALANI and HARISH SALVE). Suggestion - Let him try to learn on IP Protection and get some LAW course done with the specialization.

RAHU is the trouble maker for his career being the star lord of 10th cusp (PRAYATAK - Obstacles). While JUPITER being the Sublord, good results have come in the form of new jobs during its turn.

Current DBA is JUP-VEN-KET which could be a turning point in his career. A firm decision in a chosen line of career would be made. Also you might be in a surprise for an alliance (a good one) during April 17th to 26th and he has chances of traveling abroad with his wife. Probably his matchmaking is on the cards since April 2007 and many alliances have come from nearby foreign countries like Gulf and Singapore/Malaysia.

He lost his job in May 2008 due to his willful neglect, under the duress of SHANI. But things are looking better compared to previous state from May 2009. I foresee some kind of training during next 2 months before a job. Even that training could be the TEACHING / CONSULTING Job he might have for about 1 year. From April 2010 for next 16 months till June 2011 he would be in a stable job with good salary. Then he would enter a GOVERNMENT connected work for 1 year, before being shunted out and work for about 2 years in another concern. I dont see many location changes.

I foresee marriage during 2 periods around August 2010 or before Jan 2012. Wife might be connected with beauty profession / media. Love probably (prime time over next year). A loyal, happy wedded life on cards with the usual regular frictions.

The worst period of finances is over for him. April 2007 to Feb 2008. Next he would be selling of some properties during 2022/23 only on account of kids education and settlement. Otherwise from April 2010 onwards, he would have surplus money in his hand. He is also going to get a second income in the family.

My study of his Shani MD - He is destined to achieve a higher status of running a big organization in the later half. With long term stable career. He might have a share of that business and also inherit reasonable wealth during this time. Retirement seen in 2036 (not having full time job). Chances of staying ABROAD are high.

PMK and voice in Tamilnadu

PMK has been a force to reckon with in 6 districts of Tamilnadu (now 10 MP seats).

2009 is a different ball game, with four fronts in the run up.



See the above graphics. Clearly shows that they are good in about 18 - 20 Assembly segments. For sure wins all alone in 4 assembly segments only.

I bet their individual vote share would be about 4% in polled basis and 6% avg in alliance maths.

What kind of leaders they have to swings votes in another MP seat? No idea.

I wrote in Twitter recently #PMK proved in 1989 they have voice in 6 constituencies, to swing the result. It holds good even now. Their footprint is in 10 MP seats!

Now someone related to them (in caste basis) has to tell whether they got something in terms of returns.....
