Why do people leave their luxurious life in the US and go back to India?

Hmm… taking US citizenship and traveling the world or coming back to retire in India is an option that I have seen with 3 relatives & friends!

1. has biz, returned back when he was 45 & kinda semi retired (IIT guy), sent his daughter back to US for Bachelors, now after her MBA, settled back there itself being an US Citizen.

2. Went to US at age 34 and worked on his PhD for 6 years, Post Doc for 2 years and on job for 23 years & retired. Back now to India and started teaching as Professor near his hometown while his kids are living in US, 1 married, 1 looking for!

3. Came back when he was 60 & both kids married in India (never gave up US Citizenship and they keep biz ties in US). Mostly they are traveling around the world, after having earnt a lot. Will work till his last breath he says!

(BTW, I have given up my US Green card in during 2000 and having worked there on non immigrant visa)

Hindi as a Second Language in Tamilnadu

There is a big discussion going on in Social Media - why Hindi should not be forced upon Thamizh in Tamilnadu. Hindi as a Second Language in Tamilnadu has never been rejected. Many students do take it, but don't get recognition even if they get maximum marks in 10th or 12th.

Let us take the case of olden days Andhra ( now Telangana since June 2nd, 2014 ) In Hyderabad, there is also Urdu, so logically the mix was OK. Greater Bangalore has 30% of Karnataka population and the business folks are mostly from Hindi belt. Hence the acceptance. In Tamilnadu, except Coimbatore, Madurai and Chennai very rarely North Indians are having business (large scale). This could be the issue. Also 3 language formula was despised by the old rulers, hence the acceptance level in the rest of 50% non Hindi speaking states ( excluding Sanskrit base like Gujarathi, Marathi, Chattisgarhi, Mythili, Bhojpuri, Oriya, Assamese and Bengali to name a few ) Hindi definitely didn't find acceptance. Singapore formula is the need of the hour and with low number of BJP MPs in Rajya Sabha - a minority, Amma has a better hedge in forcing this 3 language formula.

Service Tax is needed in India

The second economy as told my many Indian economists, were not paying incomes taxes but were using Government provided services and subsidies - Petrol (not now - std. rates) , Diesel (still -5.80 loss for govt. / litre) approximately I enjoyed about 500 litres in subsidized price 500 x 6 = 3000, LPG Cooking Gas ( 12 * 800 = 9600 / year / family ). Now what I pay to Hotel food 2000 pm x 12.36% = Rs 247.2 is given as ST. The insurance premium (even that is written off for IT) has a ST component that nullifies effect. On average basis Indians earning above 5 lakhs PA pay 17% in taxes itseems. In Past Star News - CVoter was accurate for UPA Now 140-180 #ExitPoll Result wud rely on 150+ minority seats and Urban voters like for AAP.

Astrologically Ruling party combine has a chance to continue with an Young Leader.

Living on 30 rupees per day per person

Indian government has declared that anyone who spends more than 30 rupees per day per person on food and living are above poverty line. What about other expenses, like housing, utilities, school, dresses, medical expenses, entertainment etc?

That means, for a family of 4 - husband, wife, 2 kids - 30 x 4 x 30 = 3600 would be cost needed for food alone. Makes sense, considering the cost of grocery, vegetables etc.

However we need to consider these monthly costs too

Gas cost @ Rs 430, Electricity @ Rs 500, Medical @ Rs 1000, School @ Rs 1000, Dresses @ Rs 2000, Entertainment @ Rs 3000 which includes, movies, cable/dish tv, eating out once etc. & Transport @ Rs 2000.

So in all we would need about 13,600 rs a month to survive in a normal town (or a city like Bangalore/Chennai)

Inputs: I spoke to the security of my apartment - who makes about 8k for a straight 12 hours/day, 6 days shift. Even on that holiday, he goes around doing commission selling work, buying and selling old furniture.

I have a feeling more than 80% of Indians are poor. Including me.

What else do we need?

Main thing would be saving for the future, emergencies, kids marriage expenses....

But if you are an IT folk, with some experience like me...

So in India particularly in Bangalore, a minimum survival budget for food, house, transport, school, etc turns out to be more than 50K/month that too for 2 kids, one husband, one wife only. Now imagine adding up movies @ 300/seat, icecream, pizza, burgers, fries etc. Both spouses should work for quality life in Bangalore. Bachelors need 20k a month.

Obviously their language skills come to the fore.

Made In India

There was a Japanese who went to India for sightseeing.

On the last day, he hired a cab and told the driver to drive to the Airport.During the journey, a Honda drove past the taxi.

Thereupon, the man leaned out of the window excitedly and yelled, "Honda, very fast! Made in Japan!!!

After a while, a Toyota sped past the taxi and again the Japanese man leaned out of the window and yelled, "Toyota, very fast! Made in Japan!"

And then a Mitsubishi sped past the taxi. For the third time, the Japanese leaned out of the window and yelled, "Mitsubishi, very fast! Made in Japan!"

The driver was a little angry, but he kept quiet. And this went on for quite a number of cars.

Finally, the taxi came to the airport. The fare was 800 rupees!!!!

The Japanese exclaimed, "What?? So expensive!"

There upon, the driver yelled back, "Meter, Made in India VERY VERY FAST !!!!!"

#Budget Twitter messages

Boring budget! Poor, Rural folks get a good deal. Corporates are not happy! But 10% surcharge on personal IT removed! No word on Soc Sec sch

#Budget just noticed Cheap Yarn for textiles to cost less. Need not import from elsewhere! But branded guys, will hike again saying budget!

If FBT goes, the special allowances come back in. There might be some kinda tax exemptions found out. I am for a flat tax and no exemptions.

Planning commission says, it costs govt. subsidies (fertilizer, loans) @ Rs 10/- to get 1 kg Rice/Wheat produced! Nw giv at Rs 3/kg? Sense?

One gentleman from Delhi School of Economics said on a biz channel, give each family @ Rs 25,000/- PA and get rid of subsidies. Makes sense!

No way, FBT reduction would make middle class happy! Only rich middleclass (IT job) can get real relief! 30% benefits, but FBT comp 8%! :-(

"More IT based employment exchange in each Dist HQ". Long time wait. I hope Rs. doesnt make people jump Q. #Ration = Socialistic. Banks suck

National ID Project for INDIA

I have a very good interest in doing the National ID Project!

I have written about it earlier.

This is like the US Social security number. ( I had suggested like STATE-DISTRICT-CITIZEN_NO )

You can track entire details of a person, and with smart card, you will be able to track emergency info as well.

I am not sure, government will embed a chip in every person, to remove identity faking...

With cloud computing in place, there are enough ways to provide for census ( combine with 2011 budget of census ) and take care of unemployed - educated youth with computer knowledge ( training can be imparted, with my kind of media based training, that I would suggest ) and also from the funds of NREGS and donation under 80G from corporates.

I feel it is a 3 year exercise and I wish to be part of it!

I hope that my experience would give me a chance to participate in it.

Why the US economy fell off the cliff

John Doe started the day early having set his alarm clock (made in Japan) for 6 am.

while his coffeepot (made in China) was perking, he shaved with his electric razor (made in Hong Kong), put on a dress shirt (made in Sri Lanka), designer jeans (made in Singapore) and tennis shoes (made in South Korea).

after eating breakfast cooked in his new electric skillet (made in India), he sat down with his calculator (made in Mexico) to see how much he could spend today.

he got in his car (made in Germany). set his watch (made in Taiwan) to the radio (made in India), filled it with gas (from Saudi Arabia) and continued his search for a good paying American job.

at the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day, john got back home, checked his computer (made in Malaysia) and decided to relax for a while.

he put on his sandals (made in Brazil), poured himself a glass of wine (made in France) and turned on the TV (made in Indonesia) and then wondered why he couldn't find a good paying job in America.

…

and now he's hoping he can get help from a President made in Kenya.

Elections and stock market

Here is a snippet from TOI in 2004 about the stock market in relation to the elections that are going to be held now in 2009. Well I don't agree that market should peak now, without any business environment logic.

will be a buying spree after the uncertainty surrounding the poll process ends.

That has been the market's trend after each of the last three Lok Sabha elections — in 1996, 1998 and 1999.

Data on BSE Sensex and the NSE Nifty show that within four to six weeks of the final results in those three general elections, the indices touched a new temporary peak and gained 8-13.5 per cent.

In fact, the gains were as high as 25 per cent if one considers the rise in the indices from the first day of the poll till the short-term peak is reached.

In 1999, when the BJP-led coalition won the elections, the Sensex witnessed a 380 point (8 per cent) rally to breach the 5,000 level.

"In 1999, there was a clear mandate (for the BJP and its allies) and hence the euphoric rally that we saw just after the elections that year," said Ambareesh Baliga, V-P, Karvy Stockbroking.

In 1999, within days of the polls, the Nifty rallied 8 per cent from 1,393 to reach a peak of 1,505 and the Sensex also moved up the same percentage.

Even in 1996 and 1998, when no party got a clear mandate and the governments
were multi-party coalitions, the market rallied as investors were relieved of poll-related uncertainties.

"Those (1996 and 1998) were end-of-the-uncertainty kind of situation," said Arun Kejriwal of Kejriwal Research and Investment Services.

In 1998, after the election outcome, the Sensex spurted 13.5 per cent to 4,281 while the Nifty clocked a 10.5 per cent gain to 1,231. Likewise, the two benchmark indices gained 10.2 per cent and 9.7 per cent, respectively, after the 1996 polls.

Market players however said it is mostly retail investors who enter the market during these post-poll rallies, while 'smart money' exits.

"Smart operators return only when there are signs of consolidation in the market... after the new government is formed and expectations for the budget start building up," said a domestic fund manager.
