There are at least 4 to 8 hours of load shedding power cuts, everyday. But still, we have decided in our Apt. complex not to switch on lights for an hour inside our flats and the backup generator will not be on. In this way we would control the emission for a day and probably save some diesel since there might be invariably power cuts. No electrical equipment would be on.
Every simple thing counts for the future generation.

Advantages of working for a small co. in IT industry

There are very good Advantages for working for a small co.

The first and foremost, high visibility. Very good learning options, even if the period is short. Feedback is the key. If you are a silent type, probably doubly make sure. Lots of noise to be made on good work.

You are watched and governed and paid the best based on the output given. But no multiple chances given. Success is the only key. Double the pressure.

On the other hand larger companies have many options, and various plans for to make the plans work to make a person succeed. There is room for improvement given. Constant feedback is expected and actions performed.

Always weigh the pros and cons of working for any type of company and make the informed decision.

Industry goes in a circle, and you cross paths pretty fast. So make friends, wherever possible.

Any organization to survive should be employee oriented.

Take the care of Wipro/Infosys/Satyam/Cognizant/EDS etc. Now Mindtree is a superb org. Sasken has been one. Many more are there and very sorry to miss out. There are some obvious miss outs, based on the HR policies.... and no process in the org.

As they say, a compnay is good as it gets, with better employees. This is getting stronger day by day. For the risk of opportunity a person, takes, co's should also provide sufficient time to prove for anyone at any level, starting from freshers. No one is a robot to work for batteries err.. peanuts.

If employees are not treated well, the co's go into trouble mode. Stocks are halved in price. Employee Morale goes down, natural attrition hits high.

There is a report on This clearly shows that not all activities are getting sent out of USA for work. 5 or 6 percent is very minimal. But there are cost leveraging advantages too!. To overcome this USA govt should be more liberal in giving tax concessions for businesses for training the locals on software and IT related trainings. Also the visa for work restrictions, may please be removed. If someone talented comes in from abroad, he or she would be able to survive only if there is good quality of workmanship, without which they would not be able to survive in this highly competitive world. Also those who come in to USA, would spend most of their earnings back into the society, helping to churn the economy in a better way. The time taken to explain requirements would be saved, if the same person is brought in at a highly competitive prevailing local wages.

When I was a little girl, my mom liked to make breakfast food for dinner every now and then. And I remember one night in particular when she had made breakfast after a long, hard day at work.

On that evening so long ago, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage, and extremely burned toast in front of my dad. I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed! Yet, all my dad did was reached for his toast, smiled at my mom, and asked me how my day was at school.

I don't remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him smear butter and jelly on that toast and eat every bite! When I got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologize to my dad for burning the toast. And I'll never forget what he said: "Baby, I love burned toast."

Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I asked him if he really liked his toast burned. He wrapped me in his arms and said,"Debbie, your mommy put in a hard day at work today and she's real tired. And besides, a little burnt toast never hurt anyone!"

In bed that night, I thought about that scene at dinner...and the kindness my daddy showed my mom. To this day, it's a cherished memory from my childhood that I'll never forget. And it's one that came to mind just recently when Jack and I sat down to eat dinner.

I had arrived home late...as usual...and decided we would have breakfast food for dinner. Some things never change, I suppose!

To my amazement, I found the ingredients I needed, and quickly began to cook eggs, turkey sausage, and buttered toast. Thinking I had things under control, I glanced through the mail for the day. It was only a few minutes later that I remembered that I had forgotten to take the toast out of the oven!

Now, had it been any other day -- and had we had more than two pieces of bread in the entire house -- I would have started all over. But it had been one of those days and I had just used up the last two pieces of bread. So burnt toast it was!

As I set the plate down in front of Jack, I waited for a comment about the toast. But all I got was a "Thank you!" I watched as he ate bite by bite, all the time waiting for some comment about the toast. But instead, all Jack said was, "Babe, this is great. Thanks for cooking tonight. I know you had a hard day."

As I took a bite of my charred toast that night, I thought about my mom and dad...how burnt toast hadn't been a deal-breaker for them. And I quietly thanked God for giving me a marriage where burnt toast wasn't a deal-breaker either!

You know, life is full of imperfect things...and imperfect people. I'm not the best housekeeper or cook. And you might be surprised to find out that Jack isn't the perfect husband! He likes to play his music too loud, he will always find a way to avoid yard work, and he watches far too many sports. Believe it or not, watching "Golf Academy" is not my idea of a great night at home!

But somehow in the past 37 years Jack and I have learned to accept the imperfections in each other. Over time, we have stopped trying to make each other in our own mold and have learned to celebrate our differences.You might say that we've learned to love each other for who we really are!

For example, I like to take my time, I'm a perfectionist, and I'm even-tempered. I tend to work too much and sleep too little. Jack, on the other hand, is disciplined, studious, an early riser, and is a marketer's dream consumer. I count pennies and Jack could care less! Where he is strong, I am weak, and vice versa.

And while you might say that Jack and I are opposites, we're also very much alike. I can look at him and tell you what he's thinking. I can predict his actions before he finalizes his plans. On the other hand, he knows whether I'm troubled or not the moment I enter a room.

We share the same goals. We love the same things. And we are still best friends. We've traveled through many valleys and enjoyed many mountaintops. And yet, at the same time, Jack and I must work every minute of every day to make this thing called "marriage" work!

What I've learned over the years is that learning to accept each other's faults - and choosing to celebrate each other's differences - is the one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting marriage relationship.

Open source software is sought out, considered and evaluated for more than half of all business software acquisitions worldwide.

User organizations see significant business and competitive value from their use of open source software. Users are drawn to open source due to it's:

-Low cost of acquisition;
-Independence from vendor release and licensing requirements; and
-Ability to manipulate source code -- even by the smallest enterprises.

As a result, open source software has a large and growing, and increasingly unseen, presence within user organizations. The presence of open source is much larger than previously reported - and getting harder to audit and manage. Low cost and ability to manipulate source code means that open source software is (and will be) integrated into user environments, commercial software solutions, and software delivered as a service (SaaS).

It is this mixed-source, "hidden" presence that will change the nature of business software, the software industry itself, and user IT management, within three to five years.  3. He still lives in the same small 3-bedroom house in mid-town Omaha , that he bought after he got married
 50 years ago. He says that he has everything he needs in that house. His house does not have a wall or a  fence.


 4. He drives his own car everywhere and does not have a driver or security people around him.


 5. He never travels by private jet, although he owns the world's largest private jet company.

RELIANCE POWER bang with power!

The much hyped Reliance Power IPO story has come to a Red end.

 

Opening at a nice Rs 530/- issue price, it was dragged down, by the bears and people with a sense of urgency to get rid of the stock, that were alloted - which was bought on credit.

 

See the math.

 

The application money was 25% of issue cost Rs 450 * 225 = Rs 1 Lakh.

 

Margin money paid = Rs 25,000/- @ 19% interest PA, costing the total investment Rs 396.

 

Alloted shares at Rs 430 for retail investers @ 15 shares = 6450.

 

Nett refund = Rs 18550/-, effective - Rs 18154, after interest.

 

So cost of acquisition is ( 6450 + 396 ) / 15 = Rs 456.4.

 

So to break even at sale, the investor should have sold at Rs 461 per share. But see what price it closed at? Rs 376/- an effective loss of Rs 85 per share or Rs 1275 in an investment of Rs 6846, which means a whopping loss of 18.62%. Not bad for a days trade? And a months wait?

Afternoon Lunch at Home on a working day!

Very rarely I go out for lunch on a working day, not alone, but with guests and or office colleagues.

 

Since last 10 months, from the time I moved back to Bangalore, did not feel the need to go to home for lunch, as the food served at office was always good. Now that the quality has become very pathetic, I went home for lunch as a pleasant surprise.

 

I had called in though.... so home food with rasam and vegatables, really tasted wonderful. My son was happy to see me for lunch at home!

 

But the time taken to reach those 2 kms from work and return after lunch, was like 1 hour 15 minutes in all. Probably worth the visit!

New budget ideas for a super budget, Mr PC!

Here are my proper suggestions to make life simple in India - budget expectations.

* Provide a flat tax (including AMT) to 17% - I have proposed this from 1991 onwards.
* Increase service tax to 15%
* Drop the surcharges.

* Make no tax no more than its own cost.
* Bring the honesty pays policy and give a rebate for charity contributions, upto 10% - not NREG, but a Govt. setup fund, when no one cat eat it. Remember Rajiv Gandhi told, only 5% reaches on the budget plan meant for poor?
* Unemployed should get training and some money to eat. Set the training time to 6 months with a subsidy of Rs 12,000/- per individual. This should be administered jointly by state and center - equal contribution. This is apart from NREG - hard labour.
* Make usage and taxation ambit of petro-products under national purview - federal only - easy to administer the price linked to international market movements and compensate the state for revenue loss. (All VAT is easy right?)

Rumours at workplace

Recently we had a get together at our company and that day due to some food poisoning I was totally unwell. I pulled myself along and stayed late at the party as much as I can, till the dinner started and moved out for home. You cannot stay put when your stomach and butt gives up. My job was done once the US visitors moved out, keeping them in good humour and hoping their visit was taken care.

But came to know about some romours about me, spread by one of the HR person, about me looking out for a change and probably fell out with management. Typically HR folks derives cruel pleasure out of this, as I have heard from my current HR after few days after the person joined, sort of blackmailing that my resume is found on monster and I should remove it.

I have heard from many HR guys I have worked with, on other colleagues, mostly in the form of resumes posted on websites, and they see it on purpose (probably they search for more experienced people than needed for the position er... developers, wasting company's time and effort).

Unfortunately some pictures taken at the party make this outcome. Cannot help these rumour mongers.









But for rumour spreaders, accidents do happen. For spiritual people like me, if anyone thinks on negatives on me, it would affect them thousand times, in return.

Return to USA? Why and why not?

In India you earn about 30% of USA and save about 50% of USA savings (nett). But the clarity in upbringing on kids and togetherness to family... Mastercard for life moments! (no relative will ask for money, if you live and work in India, than being in USA - a Telugu Bidda says)

I decided to raise the family in India and returned back, after I made the minimum money that I thought - would take my lifetime.

Unless you have a GC or US passport, you can be kicked out anytime and live in the fear ( er... mugging and terrorism...), but in India (if you stick to your hometown state, no one care dare!)

Yeah, you do miss, on bragging to relative on dollars, shops, clean roads and trips.... snow...

I met a family in USA with 3 kids, 2 born in India, and at age of 42, the lady wanted a US Citizen kid proudly, and the kid was born special. Now they cannot return back, obviously as they have to take care of special needs of the kid they badly had in US and wanted to raise like a normal kid...

So many stories to tell.
